This was not an easy ranking to make; there’s quite a lot of parity in the middle, as I see it. Especially in a short season, this could be a battle to the death for the last couple playoff spots. Very few teams appear to not be in the race, and it will come down to which question mark, which practically every team has, getting adequately answered.
I made the lineups as I believe they are being used. It’s just a ranking, fam, don’t hate.
Pogs is one of the best drafters in the league, in planning and wheeling and dealing. Pogs and surpriseme, coming off yet another stellar season (each top 3 in points), are one of the best duos in the league. Stoey is not Fl0de, but he has proven he can excel as a 3rd forward with high-end scorers. A9ent gets too much flak and is a good LD; he could be a good LW here too. Paired with Kaberie, this is a strong back end. It doesn’t have that “elite” guy, but it’ll be a pairing in the truest sense without a weaker half, which not many teams can say. Legion is coming off his own strong season in net, and Pogs got lucky when he fell further that he should've in a draft short on goalies. Bish is a known commodity 7th man and starter talent if he wasn’t part time. Pogs can use Bish at LD half the time, moving Joe and A9ent as needed. There are no weak spots here; this team has talent, depth, structure, a sprinkle of skablam, and, yes, smushing.
#2 NOTHING BUT CHEST
xmR aNdersoN/See Dub 21 — See Dub 21/o Croydonknight9 — Jelly x 35 Scuba Dan21 — Wizzywar xdlx njdevil10 sniper0270
Calls ring out of bias, but I do believe this is one of the most talented pound-for-pound rosters in the league. Dub is one of the more versatile positional players in the league, and he’ll likely play all 3 forward positions at one point or another. Jelly is the Rodney Dangerfield of this league. Every season, no matter his linemates, he’s in contention for the Rocket Richard, and he can create for himself and others. Last season, Jelly finished 4th in points and no player last season had a higher primary point %. You have last season's Norris winner at RD in yours truly and a dark horse Vezina caliber goalie in njdevil. Scuba Dan gets his moment to shine as a starter at LD, perhaps his best long-term position. Anderson and Croydonknight are both at least top 2 round talents if full-time. The question mark for this group is the moving pieces and chemistry with skilled players who don’t have much, if any, experience with one another. It might take this team time to hit its stride and earn this rank, and Jelly will unfortunately be MIA for a few series to start (with sniper filling in at LW), but this should be a dangerous team down the stretch.
#3 FIRE AND BLOOD
phiNnyy/ac09dc — P4LE PWNR — NoToRiOuS FiGo Ian the Berean — Bluelineking7 SirPuffinton420
Pale made it his goal to play with two 1st round picks, and he got two good ones. Bluelineking will be his 2-way anchor; Figo and Pale have chemistry a long time in the making. Pale did well taking Ian late, a player showing steady improvement. However, Pale's mid rounds left something to be desired. I understand what Pale sees in phiNnyy at LW, but for a part time player usually a late pick at LD, that early 4th felt rich when he could’ve been had later. Especially in a draft weak on goalies, where a couple ones were practically calling out Pale’s name. Pale has already dropped jets killer, his 5th rounder, for SirPuffinton420. Such a move doesn’t inspire confidence, but I also can’t speak to the talent. ac09dc can provide versatility, but he will need to be ready to play Pale’s fast passing, loose style that not everyone thrives in. I also see too many right handed players on this roster. Bluelineking, while still strong as a lefty RD, will not be playing his natural position/handedness. Top end talent matters, but this feels like a good team that left some meat on the bone. And yet, it's still a top 3/4 team.
#4 LAZY COLTS
es0t3ricx — ct0WN1018 — No Regretzkys elliottism — shockazulu Young Kelch thirty7inarow
All but tied for 3rd in my rankings. This forward line is fire. There’s no reason Regretzkys can’t get back into Art Ross contention; ct0WN is the Calder favorite and one of the smarter and craftier players he’s played with; and eso is his 200ft glue player and finisher. I have no issue with a focused Kelch at G (or RD even to reunite a former pairing), and thirty7inarow has G/LD versatility too. At LD, elliottism will provide structure and defense-first play. Elliott is a very good #2 when paired with more of a puck moving #1, but now he’s required to lead a pairing for a team with Belt hopes — it’ll be new territory for him. But I think the shockazulu pick at #32 was quite the reach and RD looks like a glaring weakness. That was a crucial pick Regretzkys needed to hit on to maximize his team’s potential. I think Lazy Colts will need to outscore their issues.
#5 PSYCHO MANIAC SCRUBS
CortezEA — Hugh Laurie 88 — Sober Enuff x Tompkinsx05 — DrugMonkeyRX Master Sh0tgun
Credit to Shotty in his 2nd stint as captain: he again comes out of the draft with a logically structured 200ft team. He himself is one of the better goalies in 239, and he acquired a perennial Norris nominee in DrugMonkey, one of the toughest mofos to play against, as long as Ability is not on his team. Tompkins will fit in nicely as his team’s no frills #2 d-man. Hugh Laurie is a positionally sound, grinding center who can rely on the services of two wingers with underrated stick skills (who can swap sides with one another for fit). Sober has some natural finish and comfortability with Shotgun’s team style, but this team’s offense will depend heavily on Cortez being the primary creator. He can be an even better forward than he was in NHL18; so, here’s his shot to be The Guy™. My issue with this team is it feels exactly like Shotgun’s team last season minus TomFTW (who was their MVP): competent, but are they a real contender with enough scoring upside?
Thank you to everyone in the draft and all of you who tuned in last night to watch the draft show and support the league! View attachment 390 Not everything went as planned, but you guys showed up to support us and that's what matters.
I'll work at "failing" less for next seasons draft.
I am placing a copy of the completed Draft Board on this thread for easing viewing. View attachment 391
Congrats to all the captains .. and players..
Best of luck to everyone. Let's have a great Season 10!
This is just a mock, not a draft board. I think you're all wonderful human beings. Well, most of you. At least half of you. Give or take. Probably take. *ahem* First 3 rounds I wrote little blurbs, then I got blurbed out and just did a list for rounds 4-6.......
1.1 bbx90: xDLxBrIcKCiTyNj (C/LW/LD) — Brick is the most versatile player in the draft and the most winning player in 239 for a reason. If the personalities can match, Brick and bbx have chemistry and play a similar quick and creative passing/cycle game. And there shall be much practicing. 1.2 Master Sh0tgun: DrugMonkeyRX (RD) — Shotty gets a perennial Norris nominee and a known commodity he can trust to anchor his team. You need to hit on picks this high, and this is as safe and sure as it gets on the backend. 1.3 Pogs: surpriseme22 (RW)— Surprise me, Pogs. No, really. 1.4 Desired Customs: KosmicEA (LD) — Kosmic is the most skilled player in the draft, even at LD. He won’t be as impactful offensively as he is at FWD, but DC ideally builds his team around Kosmic playing as a 4th forward of sorts, with responsible teammates. Not that he can’t play great defense, but DC needs Kosmic’s gamebreaking ability first. 1.5 HavocXSG: Ozzy9041 (RW) — My assumption is Shock/Havoc wants to skate out again, probably center, and play with a RW with whom he has experience. Ozzy is one of the most dynamic forwards with the puck in the draft. 1.6 Clancy2113: Bluelineking7 (LD) — Clancy traded up hoping for Ozzy, and if he’s there, he’s the pick, but if he’s not, with Clancy likely to play center and RD/G friends later, Clancy wants to lock down the left side, and there’s no better choice. 1.7 P4LE PWNR: Wizzywar (RD)— Meh. The second ‘w’ isn’t capitalized, fam. Time you knew. 1.8 See Dub 21: Bcrippsx31 (G) — Dub knows what Cripps can do playing with and against him. Taking a goalie this high is unconventional, but no goalie is close to him in talent, and this won’t be a conventional draft. 1.9 P4LE PWNR: NoToRiOuS FiGo (LW/RW) — Proven chemistry, proven winning combination, and Pale is one of a handful of people who can tolerate Figo’s endless dick jokes. 1.10 No Regretzkys: es0t3ricx (LW) — A former championship LWer of his, Regretzkys goes back to what works with a structured 2-way player with whom he’s comfortable.
ROUND 2 2.1 No Regretzkys: Derekgnr (RD) — Derek, the silent assassin, has played goalie the last 2 seasons, but it wasn’t that long ago he was one of the best shutdown d-men in the league any captain would've been happy to get in the 2nd round. And Regretzkys wants to make sure he gets a rock solid defender early. 2.2 That 1 Odd Guy: cT0WN1018 (C) — Favorite for the Calder; naturally a RW, but cT0WN can play center at an equally high level. Provides a dynamic, shifty element and easy chemistry with linemates who know how to think and pass fast. 2.3 See Dub 21: SeeDew77 (RW) — The See Duo reunites; this time at forward. SeeDew will be an underrated goal scoring, 200-ft wing, and there’s no doubt she and Dub have chemistry with their puck possession, net drive style. 2.4 That 1 Odd Guy: Jelly x 35 (RW) — No matter the talent around him, all the kid does is score goals and lead offenses and not do homework. He should not have slipped this far based on talent, and maybe he won’t, but if he does for fit reasons, Odd’s team is cooking with gas. 2.5 Clancy2113: x Sober Enuff x (LW) — An off the board pick, but Sober provides Clancy with a goal scoring LW, with whom he has played with prior. And Sober is coming off a strong season at wing. 2.6 HavocXSG: wolf master00 (G) — Goalies get thin fast, and Shock is willing to reach to guarantee his friend, who might not be there by his next pick. And wolf has a case for 2nd best goalie in the pool, coming off his stellar part time season. 2.7 Desired Customs: Marty mcfly1919 (C) — DC needs a forward after a defenseman early, so he takes a strong defensive center to help balance out his earlier pick. 2.8 That 1 Odd Guy: Amazing Viper x (LW) — Odd takes a friendly face who he can trust to complete his forward line and provide more goal scoring punch. But I wouldn’t rule out a goalie here either. 2.9 Master Sh0tgun: R0N D0N V0LANTE (C) — Everyone knows what Ron can do on defense, certainly Shotgun after he captained him last season. But Ron's intelligent, defensive, passing game should play well at center in a draft pool short on them. 2.10 bbx90: CortezEA (RW) — Can be one of the better defensive glue forwards and has underrated puck skills when he’s confident. Versatile and low risk; familiarity with both bbx and Brick. But Cortez will need to remember to pull his stick over.
ROUND 3 3.1 bbx90: iEpiK x (RD) — bbx needs to take a steady, smart defenseman, and EpiK proved his worth last season at LD on Brick’s team, now getting to move to his natural side and lead a pairing. 3.2 Master Sh0tgun: AZMikeWar (RW) — Shotty gets a complimentary RW coming off a big postseason performance. Mike can keep it simple and find twine, while getting a chance to showcase more of his puck skills in a larger role than last season. 3.3 Pogs: A9ent X007 (LW) — Pogs can use A9ent, ready to prove the h8ers wrong, as his versatile Fl0de substitute at LW. A9ent knows how Pogs' teams operate, so there’s no learning curve. LD versatility in Pogs’ back pocket. 3.4 Desired Customs: nikdagreek23 (LW) — A good glue forward, nik can play any role and is a willing distributor of the puck. He just needs to find a skater build he likes first. Which could be a problem. 3.5 HavocXSG: Suneedee (LW) — Shock channels a past high scoring partnership between Suneedee and Ozzy. Sunee is looking to prove something as a starter again, and this could be a creative forward line. 3.6 Pogs: Kaberie (RD) — Don’t know enough about the player, but I believe Pogs does and tries to scoop him up before Odd. 3.7 Pogs: Xdlx njdevil10 (G) — Fearing a goalie run and a long time away from his next pick, Pogs uncharacteristically swings early on one of the top goalies, hoping he can get his preferred part timers later. 3.8 See Dub 21: elliottism (LD) — Dub wants to make sure he has a trustworthy defenseman before they come off the board. There’s familiarity with elliott’s steady, defense-first game from Season 8. 3.9 That 1 Odd Guy: xAbiLiTy x (G) — Goalie run! There’s a good relationship here, and Ability is hungry to showcase himself in net after a season out as a skater. 3.10 Clancy2113: Birdinais (G) — Clancy inevitably wants his guys. This area seems a smarter place to take them.
ROUND 4 4.1 No Regretzkys: Wienisimov (C)
4.2 No Regretzkys: linkrunner (G)
4.3 See Dub 21: x mR aNdersoN x (LW - PT)
4.4 P4LE PWNR: xilfxlegion (G)
4.5 Clancy2113: Hamburglar421 (RD)
4.6 HavocXSG: DuffMcGriff (RD)
4.7 Desired Customs: Young Kelch (G)
4.8 No Regretzkys: MAGILLA72 (LD)
4.9 Master Sh0tgun: RUNNGduckBUTTER (LD)
4.10 bbx90: Tompkinsx05 (LD)
